  • Damaged or difficult personal relationships
  • Compulsive behaviour such as overworking, cleaning when there is no need to, engaging in out of control sexual activities.
  • Bullying others
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart problems
  • Digestion problems
  • Eating disorders
  • A lowering of your immune system, making you prone to illnesses and infections
  • Self harm

Causes of Anger

Anger is a powerful and healthy emotion which helps you to survive when you feel attacked, dishonoured or hurt in any way. This is how it works:

When you feel threatened, your body responds by releasing hormones into the bloodstream. These give you extra strength and energy, enabling you to fight back or to run away. Your body become tense and alert and ready for action. As you express your anger, the tension is released.

You may:

  • Express your anger appropriately. Anger is useful emotion when you are able to express it appropriately, because it helps you to live the life you want, for example without being taken advantage of. Therefore it is important for you to be able to say how you feel, to talk about the reasons why you are angry, and where possible to negotiate a resolution. And it is good to release all that tension and energy that anger has generated through harmless physical activity, for example through exercise or going to the gym.
  • Express your anger inappropriately. For example, you might be abusive or violent to others or to yourself. Therefore, relationships suffer and you do too. You are likely to experience a range of negative emotions, including shame and guilt.
  • Suppress your anger by bottling up your feelings. Then all that energy turns inwards and causes a range of physical and emotional symptoms such as those listed above. If you are depressed, you are likely to have deep underlying feelings of anger. You may be unable to express your anger appropriately through words or actions for many reasons. This may have something to do with the way you were brought up, for example, when you were small you might have been frightened by the anger of adults, or have been frightened by the strength of your own anger, or have been punished for expressing your own anger.

You may not know how to express your anger. This is nothing to be ashamed of, because it’s something that you can learn.
